Yes. Every work on this site was painted with a brush, on paper or silk, by a person. Nothing is printed, nothing is a giclée or a reproduction, and nothing is an edition. If you look at the photograph at full size you will see the marks of the brush: ink pooling at the end of a stroke, a dry brush skipping over the paper, color bleeding into a wet wash. We are happy to send close-up photographs of any passage you want to check.

We do not say, because we do not know in a way we would be prepared to put on an invoice. Many of the works carry an inscription and seals. We record them as they appear, and we do not translate or attribute them, because a name on a painting is not evidence of who painted it. We sell the object and the skill visible in it, not a name.

We do not assign a date, a period or a dynasty to any work, and none should be inferred from its style, its mounting, its wear or its inscriptions. Works in this tradition have been painted in the same manner for a long time and continue to be. If age matters to you, this is not the right place to buy, and we will say so rather than sell you something on a guess.

We have not translated them and we do not offer readings of them. They are part of the object and are described on each page as "recorded as they appear." If you would like to have them read, we can recommend an independent reader, and we will cooperate with whatever you find. What you find will not change our description.

The price on the page includes the work in the mount or frame shown in the photograph, packing by us, and a written care note. It does not include shipping and insurance, which we quote at cost once we know the address, or any sales tax or import duty that may apply where you are.

The price on the page is the price, for everyone. We keep our prices modest and stable rather than high and negotiable. Designers and trade buyers taking three or more works are offered net pricing, agreed in writing before invoice; see Services.

Yes, in several ways. We will send additional photographs of anything you ask for, including the back and the mounting, a photograph in daylight next to a known color, or a short video of a scroll being unrolled. We can also mock the work up to scale on a photograph of your wall. Viewing in person is by appointment where distance allows. And anything bought unseen can be returned within fourteen days.

Measurements are given on request, in inches and centimeters, for the painted area and for the overall mounted or framed size, and are accurate to within about half an inch. Ask us, quoting the reference, and you will have them the same working day.

Packed by us and sent insured, door to door. Hanging scrolls travel rolled in acid-free tissue inside a rigid tube and case. Framed works travel with the glazing taped, the corners protected, in a double-wall carton. The screen travels in a crate made to its size. We keep photographs of each work in its packing. Tell us within fourteen days of delivery and we will arrange collection and refund you in full, including the outbound shipping if the work was not as described, or less the outbound shipping if it simply did not suit. Works that have been re-mounted, framed or altered to your instruction are the one exception, and we say so before any such work begins.

No, because there is nothing to certify beyond what is written on the page: a work made by hand, described by what we can see, with no claim as to age or maker. Your invoice repeats that description word for word, and it is the document you would rely on. See How We Describe.

Yes. We arrange mounting and framing with a framer we use regularly and pass the invoice on at cost, quoted in writing before any work starts. It adds one to three weeks to delivery. See Services.

Not through this site. If you have something you think we should see, write to us with photographs and we will tell you honestly whether it is the kind of thing we deal in.
