Scholars Under Banana Leaves

Figure painting of this kind is done in two passes: a fine outline for the faces, hands and folds of cloth, then washes of color kept well inside the lines. The banana leaves are the exception, painted broad and wet in a pale green and left to dry with their edges soft. The whole picture is about the contrast between the precise figures and the loose foliage.
It is a large, wide, framed object with its own carved brackets, and it wants a wall above a piece of furniture where people gather: a dining room is ideal. The pink mat is a strong choice and is part of the object as offered.
