Eagles Under the Pine

Two eagles on a rock beneath a pine that arches over them, one bird turned to watch something we cannot see. Feathers in dry, scratched ink; rock and needles in wet.
Bird painting in this manner is a test of brush control. The plumage is laid down with a nearly dry brush dragged sideways, so each stroke splits into several hairs, while the eye and beak are single sharp touches of dark ink. The pine above is the opposite: loose, wet and quick, so the birds sit forward, off the rock.
It is a strong, vertical picture for a study, a landing or an entrance hall. Because the subject is mostly black and gray, it sits equally well in a modern room and a traditional one.
