Five horses at full stretch across the width of the paper, with almost no line describing the ground. The most physical picture we have.
Each horse is built from broad wet strokes for the body, a dry dragged brush for mane and tail, and a few sharp dark touches for hooves, nostrils and eyes. There is no correcting a stroke like this once it is down, which is why paintings in this manner are either alive or not. These are.
A long horizontal picture like this wants a wide wall and a little distance: above a sofa, over a long table, along a corridor. The gold-ground mat lifts the ink and keeps the whole thing from reading as gray.
