Three horses standing close under the bare branches of a plum, the tree drawn in dry, cracked ink and the animals in wet washes of gray and black.
The contrast between the two kinds of brushwork is the point: the branch is scratched on with a brush so dry it skips, and the horses beneath are soft, rounded pools of ink with hardly an outline. The picture has a stillness that the running horses elsewhere on this site do not.
It is a tall, narrow panel and among the least expensive works here, which makes it a good first purchase for someone new to ink painting. It will suit a bedroom or a quiet corner of a sitting room.
