Houses by the Spring River

A cluster of white-walled houses among trees on a bend of river, a single boat on the water, and the water itself left as bare paper.
Architecture in ink painting is usually drawn with a ruler; here it is not, and the slightly wandering roof-lines are what give the village its life. The trees are the opposite, put on fast and wet with the side of the brush, so that the houses seem to be caught in a thicket.
The orange mat is unusual and part of the object's character. It makes the picture warmer than a plain ink landscape and suits a room with earth tones or terracotta. Long and low, it sits well above a console.
