Pines on the Ridge

Pines clinging to a rocky ridge, painted almost entirely in wet black ink with a few touches of ocher where the rock catches the sun.
The brush here is loaded and fast. Trunks are single strokes, needles are stabbed on in clusters, and the rock is built up in overlapping washes that were allowed to run into one another. It is a picture that rewards standing close: the pooling of ink at the ends of strokes shows exactly where the hand paused.
The tall format suits a narrow wall, the side of a chimney breast, or the space between two doors. The gold silk mat is bright, and against a pale wall it frames the ink like a lit window.
