Artifex is the Latin word for a maker. We deal in paintings and screens made by hand in the Chinese tradition, chosen for the quality of the brush and for the rooms they will live in. Twelve works at present, each photographed as it is and described only by what we can see. Every price is on the page, from $360 to $790.

How we work

Made by hand

Everything here was painted with a brush, on paper or silk. Nothing is printed and nothing is an edition. When you buy a work you are buying the one object in the photograph, with the mount or frame it is shown in.

Described by eye

We write down the paper, the pigment, the mounting and the marks, and nothing we cannot see. We do not assign dates, name painters or invent a history for a work. Inscriptions and seals are recorded as they appear.

Priced on the page

The price on the page is the price. Packing is included; shipping and insurance are quoted at cost once we know where a work is going. Fourteen days to return anything bought unseen.

Buying

From the page to your wall

Choose

Read the page, look at the photograph at full size, and ask for more views, a daylight photograph or a mock-up on your wall.

Ask

Write to us quoting the reference. We answer the same working day and will tell you plainly if we think a work will not suit the room.

Confirm

We send an invoice describing the work in the same terms as its page, with the shipping quote. Pay by bank transfer or card; the work is held for you meanwhile.

Receive

Packed by us, insured in transit, delivered to your door. Live with it for fourteen days; if it is not right, we collect it and refund you.

More photographs, measurements, a shipping quote, or an honest opinion about whether it suits the wall. No obligation, and no follow-up unless you ask for it.
